Sydney is rife
with the signs of Autumn right now – cool shadows, stiff afternoon breezes and soft,
golden sunlight that makes the lush urban scenery seem endless and romantic. It’s
also the time for new-season collections to drop, and last week Sydney label
Secret Squirrel Clothing launched their AW09 offerings at cult inner west
boutique, Pigeon Ground Records & Clothing.
The collection,
Darker Than Blue, evokes the opulence of the art deco era with shimmering silk
dresses, antique-look black lace and a show-stopping black velvet smoking
jacket with floral print. The range then fast-forwards to modern-day, with black
and green army jackets, tuxedo mini dresses and tees emblazoned with prints by
cult Sydney design team We Buy Your Kids.
“We like to mix
something girly with something strong, so as to be never one way of the other,”
says designer Bri Cheeseman, who runs Secret Squirrel with her partner Andrew
Prince. “I guess if I had to define the label, I’d say we’re trying to make
clothes that will stand the test of time – clothes that are simple and elegant
without necessarily looking ‘simple and elegant’. We are young and modern, and
a little innocent, but there is a splash of gorgeous and grown up about us,
too.”
“Our clothing is
greatly inspired by our love of vintage fashion and times past,” says Bri. “Although,
while we love all things secondhand and pre-loved, we are not floating around
in vintage fabrics with bad BO.”
“Also, a lot of
the time I like to look at ugly shit, like driving around [industrial suburbs] Botany
or Alexandria. And I love to look at old people and what they are wearing, old
men in their grey slacks and navy jumpers, those brown checked polyester shirts
and vinyl shoes with the zips on the side.”
Other inspirations
are people-watching, TV, music, art, flowers and pretty blogs – “All those
things everyone says,” says Bri.
The Secret
Squirrel story officially began under a canvas umbrella at Sydney's Glebe
Markets, where the label’s playful prints and super flattering cuts proved an
instant success. Today Bri and Andrew produce two seasonal collections a year,
with the label stocked in a select range of retail and online boutiques
throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Pigeon
Ground, which sells a mix of new Australian labels, a well-edited vintage selection
and rows and rows of vinyl, is the only shop you can find the entire Darker
Than Blue collection.
On launch
night, the place is packed to capacity with existing and new fans of the label
lining up to sip Kid You Not wine and command the shop’s one sole changeroom. By
evening’s end, Secret Squirrel stocks are greatly depleted and the vintage-feel
smoking jacket has totally sold out. Bring on the cold weather.
